Global Order Under Strain as UN Warns of Rising Divisions and Instability

The United Nations has issued a grave warning that the international system responsible for maintaining global peace and stability since the end of the Second World War is facing unprecedented pressure, as geopolitical rivalries, economic turmoil, and weakening diplomacy deepen divisions across the world.

Addressing a special session marking the 80th anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned that the foundations of multilateral cooperation are steadily eroding at a time when collective action is more critical than ever. He said rising nationalism, expanding militarization, and declining trust among states are undermining the global mechanisms designed to prevent conflict and promote shared progress.

“Powerful forces are pulling the world apart precisely when unity is most urgently needed,” Guterres warned, stressing that fragmented global responses to common challenges risk intensifying instability and conflict.

Escalating Conflicts and Economic Pressures

Guterres highlighted that political and military tensions are intensifying across several regions, with renewed violence in parts of the Middle East worsening humanitarian conditions and increasing civilian suffering. At the same time, political unrest and governance challenges in multiple countries reflect growing public frustration fueled by economic hardship and social inequality.

Many developing nations, he noted, are struggling with soaring inflation, unemployment, and mounting debt, conditions that are placing additional strain on already fragile economies. Meanwhile, trade disputes and protectionist policies among major economies are disrupting global supply chains and further fragmenting the international economic system.

Multilateral System Under Stress

The UN chief expressed concern that international law and collective institutions are being sidelined, even as global military spending continues to rise sharply. In contrast, funding for humanitarian assistance, climate mitigation, and sustainable development remains far below what is required to address escalating global needs.

He emphasized that transnational threats — including climate change, pandemics, cyber insecurity, forced migration, and food shortages — cannot be effectively managed by individual nations acting alone.

“A world that invests more in weapons than in human security is heading in the wrong direction,” Guterres cautioned, calling for a renewed commitment to diplomacy and cooperation.

A Critical Moment for Global Leadership

Despite the somber assessment, Guterres stressed that the current trajectory is not irreversible. He pointed to historical examples where international cooperation delivered meaningful results, underscoring that collective action remains possible if political will can be restored.

As the United Nations enters its ninth decade, the Secretary-General urged world leaders to prioritize dialogue over confrontation and shared responsibility over unilateralism. He warned that continued divisions could weaken global institutions at a moment when they are needed most.

“The choices made today will shape the future of international governance and determine whether peace, stability, and prosperity can be secured for generations to come,” he said.
