Islamabad: Heavy snowfall in Pakistan’s upper and northern regions has severely disrupted daily life, blocked major highways and stranded tourists, while at least two people have lost their lives in weather-related incidents.
Snowfall affected northern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and upper areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Several roads, including the Quetta–Ziarat and N-50 highways, were closed, leaving dozens of vehicles and tourists stranded. Extremely cold weather and slippery roads caused multiple accidents, injuring several people.
In Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, heavy snow cut off remote areas, disrupted power supply and confined residents to their homes. Rescue 1122 and local authorities carried out relief operations, rescuing stranded travellers and shifting people to safer locations.
Authorities have advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and use tyre chains in snowbound areas, as clearance operations continue.
