Youm-e-Istehsal, a somber reminder of India’s illegal revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, is observed annually on August 5 by Pakistanis and Kashmiris worldwide. This day represents a humanitarian disaster in addition to a political betrayal. Kashmiris hold this date in their collective memory as the day that Modi’s Hindutva regime crushed their identity, autonomy, and aspirations for freedom.

A deliberate act of occupation, the repeal of Articles 370 and 35A was intended to permanently change the political and demographic makeup of the area. It was not merely a constitutional ploy. India turned a disputed area into an outdoor prison overnight. Leaders were arrested, tens of thousands more troops were sent in, and an unprecedented communication blackout isolated the entire population from the outside world.

This was an attack on the core of Kashmiri life, not just political aggression. Erasing Kashmir’s Muslim-majority identity, silencing dissent, and paving the way for demographic engineering by bringing in outsiders were the clear goals of the Modi administration. Bans, ruthless crackdowns, and bulldozers became commonplace instruments of government. Not only was Kashmir’s voice disregarded, it was purposefully silenced.

However, August 5th also reveals the hypocrisy of the world. The international community has mostly ignored Kashmir’s predicament while being so quick to support democracy and human rights in other places. While the people they were intended to protect continue to live under occupation, the United Nations resolutions on the right to self-determination are still sitting on the shelf, unimplemented.

Silence has been preferred over justice by powerful nations motivated by economic and strategic interests.

For Kashmiris, Youm-e-Istehsal is a call for acceptance, unity, and long-delayed justice rather than political symbolism. It serves as a reminder to the world that without a resolution to the Kashmir dispute that reflects the desires of its people, peace in South Asia is impossible.

Pakistan’s commemoration of this day is a commitment rather than merely a gesture. a commitment to keep speaking out for Kashmir on all international forums, to refute India’s misleading claims, and to make sure that the crimes carried out in silence are never forgotten.

We must keep in mind that silence is complicity as we commemorate the day that the chains were tightened around Kashmir on this August 5. The world has to decide whether to support the oppressor or the oppressed. Who spoke and who remained silent will be remembered by history.
