The Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS), Lahore, organised a thought-provoking roundtable titled “Character Building as the Bedrock of Pakistan Air Force Leadership.” The event brought together officers of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), members of academia, and representatives from various think tanks to discuss how moral integrity and character form the foundation of effective military leadership.
In his opening remarks, Dr Zahid Khan, Associate Senior Researcher at CASS Lahore, highlighted that the Centre’s objective in hosting such discussions is to explore the critical intersections between security, technology, and policy while drawing lessons from the professional and ethical traditions of Pakistan’s armed forces.
Delivering the keynote address, Air Commodore Khalid Banuri (Retd), Senior Advisor to PAF’s Project Phoenix, explained that the PAF’s leadership philosophy is rooted in the belief that “character precedes competence.” He emphasised that true military excellence stems not only from operational skill but also from integrity, discipline, humility, and purpose — values that empower officers to act with moral clarity in complex operational scenarios.
He noted that under the vision of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, this philosophy has been institutionalised through the establishment of the Jinnah Centre for Character and Leadership. Referring to what he termed “The Sidhu Phenomenon,” Air Cdre Banuri described how ACM Sidhu’s visionary leadership, anchored in humility and intellectual discipline, has transformed the PAF into a modern, multidomain force.
Highlighting the May 2025 conflict, he said the PAF’s professionalism and moral resolve led to a “historic victory” that reaffirmed the enduring truth that integrity and moral strength are the ultimate multipliers of combat power.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Marshal Asim Suleiman (Retd), President CASS Lahore, reflected on the deeper dimensions of leadership within the PAF. He remarked that leadership is “the moral art of living the values that inspire others,” stressing that vision and competence lose meaning without integrity.
Drawing a contrast with the Indian Air Force, Air Mshl Suleiman observed that while the PAF’s leadership has remained grounded in humility and discipline, its Indian counterpart has increasingly become politicised and prone to exaggerated claims. He reiterated that during the May 2025 conflict, the PAF demonstrated moral courage, restraint, and credibility — qualities that define its chivalrous spirit.
He further noted that ACM Sidhu’s humility during the conflict, despite overseeing a major operational success, exemplified true leadership — one that avoids self-promotion and remains anchored in service.
Concluding the session, participants unanimously agreed that the enduring strength of national defence lies in the moral fabric of its leadership, and that the Pakistan Air Force stands as a shining example of character-driven excellence.
