Johannesburg South Africa : The Kashmir Global Movement (KGM), led by Dr. Muhammad Tahir Tabassum, in collaboration with prominent African human rights advocates, hosted the Nelson Mandela Kashmir–Africa–Peace Seminar in Johannesburg. The gathering brought together civil society leaders, scholars, diplomats, and peace activists from across Africa and the Global South to express solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Participants unanimously adopted a Resolution on Kashmir, reaffirming universal principles of freedom, dignity, and justice as embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the South African Bill of Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
The resolution raised serious concerns over continuing human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, including restrictions on freedom of movement, association, religion, and expression, as well as reports of arbitrary detentions, extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, mass rapes, and torture. Delegates condemned these actions as grave violations of international law and basic human decency.
The seminar called on the Government of South Africa, the African Union, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and G20 leaders to take meaningful steps to hold the Government of India accountable to its international obligations.
Delegates further urged India to respect, protect, and uphold the rights of the Kashmiri people, including by implementing UN Security Council Resolution 47 (1948) and setting a date for a free and fair plebiscite to allow the people of Jammu and Kashmir to determine their political future without occupation or external interference.
“The spirit of Nelson Mandela reminds us that freedom anywhere remains incomplete until it is secured everywhere,” said Salman Khan, Chairperson of KGM. “Today, Africa’s moral voice strengthens the global call for justice and freedom in Kashmir.”
