The world is standing at a decisive moment, with the international order that has underpinned global stability for decades now facing unprecedented strain, the United Nations has warned.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued the stark caution while addressing a commemorative event marking the 80th anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly, stating that rising nationalism, militarization, and declining trust among nations are steadily weakening the multilateral system.
“Powerful forces are undermining global cooperation at a moment when unity is needed more than ever,” Guterres warned, underscoring the urgency of renewed international solidarity.
According to the UN chief, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, widening political unrest, and deepening economic pressures in fragile states are accelerating global instability. Many developing countries are struggling with rising inflation, unemployment, and mounting debt burdens, while trade tensions among major economies risk further fragmenting already fragile global markets.
Guterres highlighted a growing imbalance in global priorities, noting that military spending continues to surge, while funding for humanitarian assistance, climate action, and sustainable development remains insufficient. He stressed that challenges such as climate change, pandemics, cyber threats, and forced migration transcend national borders and cannot be effectively addressed by any single country acting alone.
Calling on world leaders to reassess their choices, the UN Secretary-General urged dialogue over confrontation and cooperation over division.
“The decisions made today will determine not only the future of global institutions but the stability and prosperity of generations to come,” he said.
As the United Nations enters its ninth decade, Guterres’ message carried a sobering warning: the global community faces a critical crossroads. The path chosen now will determine whether international governance can continue to prevent conflict, manage crises, and promote shared progress in an increasingly fragmented world.
