ISLAMABAD: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday said that relations between Russia and China have reached an “unprecedented level and depth,” underlining the expanding scope of cooperation between the two countries amid shifting global dynamics.
Speaking at his annual press conference in Moscow, Lavrov described the partnership with Beijing as historically close and multifaceted, encompassing political, diplomatic, and strategic cooperation. He said Russia attached great importance to its relationship with China, which he described as a key pillar of Moscow’s foreign policy.
“The ties between Russia and China now reflect a level of mutual trust and cooperation that has not existed before,” Lavrov said, noting alignment between the two countries on major international issues and shared strategic interests.
Observers say the strengthening of Russia–China relations is particularly significant as both countries navigate an increasingly complex global environment marked by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Moscow and Beijing have expanded cooperation through multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS. Senior officials from both sides have repeatedly described their relationship as a comprehensive strategic partnership. During a meeting in 2025, Chinese leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing coordination with Russia on matters related to global peace and stability.
Lavrov clarified that despite the growing closeness, Russia and China are not seeking to establish a formal military alliance. He said the partnership is based on shared interests and cooperation rather than bloc politics.
