The federal government has announced a comprehensive long-term development plan to transform Port Qasim into a modern, climate-resilient industrial and logistics hub aligned with global standards.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, at Port Qasim. Addressing the participants, the minister stated that the Climate-Resilient Industrial Complex is a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to promote sustainable industrial growth while safeguarding critical infrastructure against the impacts of climate change.
He emphasized that Port Qasim is being positioned as a major gateway for Pakistan’s national economy and a key regional center for trade and industry.
The minister informed the meeting that the development project spans over 14,000 acres and has been systematically divided into three industrial zones to ensure organized and efficient industrial development. Under the plan, the Eastern Zone will cater to heavy industries and export-oriented units to boost large-scale manufacturing and exports. The North-Western Zone will focus on value-added industries and port-related services, including logistics, warehousing, and auxiliary facilities. The South-Western Zone has been earmarked for specialized industrial and commercial activities.
Highlighting the port’s existing industrial strength, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry noted that Port Qasim currently hosts 833 operational industrial units, with an additional 40 units under construction, underscoring its expanding role beyond conventional port functions.
He further stressed that Port Qasim is a vital component of Pakistan’s supply chain and export framework. To enhance operational efficiency, the government is prioritizing the modernization of port infrastructure along with improvements in road and rail connectivity, aimed at reducing logistics costs and enhancing trade competitiveness.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the minister stated that the Port Qasim Industrial Complex is expected to become a major hub for employment generation, domestic and foreign investment, and sustainable economic development, significantly strengthening Pakistan’s industrial and trade capacity.
