ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Speaker continued legislative proceedings despite repeated opposition objections over an incomplete quorum, triggering protests and a walkout inside the House.
Opposition lawmaker Iqbal Afridi persistently raised the quorum issue; however, the Chair ruled that quorum had already been pointed out and counted earlier, declining to allow the matter to be raised again on the microphone. Members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) also opposed the legislative process.
At the time of voting, only 66 members were present against the required quorum of 86. In protest, Afridi staged a walkout from the session.
Despite the controversy, the Assembly passed six bills within eight minutes, including amendments related to the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority, Federal Capital Islamabad Senior Citizens, Pakistan Citizenship, Hemp Control and Regulatory Authority, Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use), and the National Archives of Pakistan. All bills were tabled by the federal minister for parliamentary affairs.
