Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a telephone conversation on Wednesday to discuss the evolving regional situation, according to an official statement.
During the call, the two leaders reviewed recent developments in the region and exchanged views on matters of shared concern. Both emphasized the importance of maintaining regional stability and strengthening cooperation, while reaffirming their commitment to ongoing diplomatic engagement and coordination between Pakistan and Iran.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had congratulated Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei after he assumed leadership following the assassination of his father, Ali Khamenei. In the same message, he also conveyed his condolences on the passing of the late Iranian leader.
In a letter issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz expressed hope that Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership would steer Iran toward peace, stability, dignity, and prosperity, while reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation.
President Asif Ali Zardari also sent his good wishes to the new Iranian leader. Subsequently, on March 11, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held another telephone conversation with Mojtaba Khamenei, during which both leaders discussed the regional situation and stressed the need for sustained diplomatic dialogue between Pakistan and Iran.
The current crisis in the region began last month when the United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on Iran, resulting in the death of long-time Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The attack triggered a wider regional confrontation as Tehran vowed retaliation and launched missile and drone strikes on Israeli targets and facilities associated with US forces across the Middle East.
