LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced a nationwide protest campaign beginning August 16, with simultaneous demonstrations planned across all four provinces.
The decision was taken at a special meeting chaired by JI Pakistan Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman and attended by the party’s central leadership. The party said Independence Day celebrations would be observed with full enthusiasm, prompting it to postpone the protests from August 9 to August 16.
Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said demonstrations would be held simultaneously across the country on August 16. In Lahore, JI workers will stage a large sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s House, while protests will be organized outside the Governor Houses in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan.
He said the protest movement was aimed at pressuring the government to address public grievances and reverse what the party described as unjust decisions.
The JI chief said organized demonstrations had already been held at 510 locations across the country, with protesters demanding lower petrol prices and the abolition of levies. He said the party would continue raising its voice against independent power producers (IPPs) and other policies it considers harmful to the public.
Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman also welcomed the defense agreement involving Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, saying it could help reduce dependence on adversaries. He proposed expanding the arrangement to include Qatar, Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia and Indonesia, arguing that wider participation could contribute to the formation of a stronger bloc among Muslim countries.
