ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has urged the international community to intensify efforts to end crimes against journalists, calling journalism an essential pillar of the state and a vital component of democracy.
In his message marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Speaker expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of violence, threats, and intimidation faced by journalists worldwide. He noted that many have made the ultimate sacrifice while performing their professional duties to uphold truth and accountability.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq strongly condemned the targeting and persecution of journalists in Gaza, Palestine, and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), describing these acts as gross violations of human rights and freedom of expression. He called on the United Nations to take immediate notice of these serious offenses.
“Suppressing press freedom is equivalent to concealing the truth,” the Speaker said, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to a free and independent media and the protection of journalists.
He emphasized that the Parliament of Pakistan has always played an active role in ensuring journalists’ rights and promoting transparency. He cited the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017 as a clear reflection of Parliament’s commitment to openness and accountability in governance.
The Speaker stressed the need to provide journalists with a safe and enabling environment to perform their duties without fear, noting that their contribution to the promotion and sustainability of democracy remains invaluable.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq concluded by reaffirming that the National Assembly will continue to champion the cause of press freedom and raise its voice at all forums for the protection and rights of journalists in Pakistan and around the world.
