Kashmiri Delegation Raises Human Rights Concerns at UNHRC Session in Geneva

Geneva: A Kashmiri delegation held a series of meetings with United Nations Special Rapporteurs, UN officials, and members of the diplomatic community on the sidelines of the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, where they briefed them on the prevailing human rights situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
During the meetings, the delegation engaged with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, the Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, and the Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing.
The delegation provided detailed briefings to each official in accordance with their respective mandates. They also appreciated the communications previously sent by UN mandate holders to the Government of India and urged them to continue pressing New Delhi to repeal what they termed draconian laws that allegedly provide impunity and facilitate human rights violations in the occupied territory.
In separate interactions with diplomats and representatives of various countries, the delegation called upon the international community to take practical steps to urge the Government of India to end its repression in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and create conditions conducive for holding a United Nations–supervised plebiscite in the territory.
The delegation was headed by Altaf Hussain Wani and included Ghulam Muhammad Safi, Shamim Shawl, Sardar Amjad Yousaf Khan, and Advocate Parvez Ahmed Shah.
