Islamabad
In line with the vision of Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and under the leadership of Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Sohail Ashraf, with the oversight of Director General Islamabad Water Agency, CDA, Sardar Khan Zimri, efforts are underway to explore options for modernising Islamabad’s water management system to ensure a more efficient, reliable and sustainable water supply for residents of the federal capital.
In this regard, discussions have been held with representatives of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on proposed cooperation for a technical and financial assessment of Islamabad Water’s existing infrastructure. The proposed collaboration aims to improve operational efficiency, promote energy savings and support the sustainable management of water resources.
Under the proposed initiative, a comprehensive technical and financial assessment would cover approximately 200 tube wells, 40 overhead water tanks and associated pumping stations. The assessment would evaluate the performance of the existing system and identify opportunities for improvement. Key areas of review would include electricity consumption, water pressure, distribution efficiency, operational and maintenance costs, and the overall performance of the existing water supply infrastructure.
The initiative would also examine the feasibility of introducing a modern Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This technology could enable real-time monitoring, automated control and improved operational management of the water supply network. Its potential implementation is expected to help identify operational inefficiencies, strengthen oversight of water distribution and facilitate informed, data-driven decision-making.
Under the vision of Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, the leadership of CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf and the oversight of Director General Islamabad Water Agency, CDA, Sardar Khan Zimri, the proposed initiative seeks to identify practical and sustainable solutions to strengthen Islamabad’s water infrastructure and improve service delivery to residents.
Following the initial assessment, the preparation of technical documentation, financial feasibility studies and administrative assessments is proposed. Subject to the completion of the requisite evaluations, approval by the competent forums and compliance with applicable rules and regulations, an internationally competitive bidding process may be considered for project implementation. The scope of services, responsibilities and contractual arrangements for the selected company would be determined in accordance with the final agreement and approved terms and conditions.
The key objectives of the proposed initiative include reducing unnecessary electricity expenditure, improving the operational efficiency of water supply services, promoting the effective use of modern technology and identifying sustainable solutions to meet the growing water requirements of Islamabad’s population.
The CDA remains committed to strengthening the city’s water management system by utilising available resources and exploring appropriate technical and institutional partnerships. Through planned modernisation and improvements in operational practices, Islamabad Water aims to enhance the reliability of water supply services and promote the responsible and sustainable use of water resources.
The proposed cooperation with the IFC represents an opportunity to assess modern water management solutions for Islamabad and identify practical measures to develop a more efficient, resilient and sustainable water supply system for present and future generations.
